Because Ripon needs another acronym...

How do I use this site?

If you're unfamiliar with Ning (as many of us are), then you should know that it's something like a cross between Facebook and blogs. R.I.P.E.N. is its own network with members sharing information and updating their own profiles, but you can create or join other Ning networks, too.

On this page you will find blog posts by members with information about the initiative or ideas they wish to share. Go to the tab labeled "Dirt" up above to make your own blog posts. They will show up on the main page once approved. You can also participate in discussions on the "Forum" tab. On this page, under the posts and events, you will find a box labeled "Suggested Reading" that displays our compiled list of important or interesting links. Feel free to explore other areas like "Photos", "Videos", or update your profile under "Me" and add your own content. Send a message to R.I.P.E.N. or email oce@ripon.edu if you have any questions!

Obama on Local Food

"What we've got to do is change how we think about, for example, getting local farmers connected to school districts because that would benefit the farmers delivering fresh produce."

Going Trayless

We're not alone--according to this article on Treehugger.com (a website I've become somewhat addicted to), nearly half of US colleges are taking trays out of their cafeterias in an effort to cut down on food waste, save water, encourage healthier eating habits, and make the dining environment more homey.

As… Continue

The First Dig

Thanks to everyone who came and helped out yesterday evening at our first community garden meeting with actual gardening! The meeting went a little long, but we made a great start on the garden and it seems like everyone had a good time. Hopefully pictures of our first dig will be up soon. In the meantime, watch for the next gardening dates--they'll likely be every couple of days until most of the work is done, so you should be able to find a time that works for you if you'd like to get… Continue

"Not All Meat is Created Equal"

An Utne Reader blog post yesterday suggests that eating grass-fed beef is better for the environment than vegetarianism. How?

"... grass-fed livestock can be an essential player in a sustainable set-up. Manure revitalizes soil (in lieu of chemical fertilizers or shipped-in compost), and grazing encourages plant growth."
